Our students attend a small middle school in California. The school is located in a low -income area and the majority of the school is eligible for free and reduced lunch. Many of our students are children of immigrants or immigrants themselves and are classified as English Language Learners. They are intelligent and hardworking, but because of limited exposure to English at home, they come to us years below grade level. They are critical thinkers, but haven't necessarily had the opportunity to have conversations that are essential to developing critical thinking skills because they haven't had the exposure to language.
