I am implementing an 8-week mindfulness unit into my daily classroom curriculum. As students learn various mindfulness strategies, my goal is to push them towards independence. Part of this independence will include a space, called a calm corner, where students can implement strategies as they need. These materials will provide the students with extra tools. Sand timers will be used to make sure they’re using their time appropriately in the corner. Stress balls, putty, and mindfulness break cards will provide the students with tools to utilize. Both books will be used in the mindfulness instruction. The iPad will be used to download various mindfulness apps that I have researched for students to use independently when in the calm corner. Finally, at our celebration, students will each receive a gratitude journal to continue their practices.
I believe that providing students with mindfulness strategies and teaching them how to use them independently is setting students up for success in the future. I want my students to feel in control of their emotions and to feel equipped with tools to help them do just that.
