Due to a lower socioeconomic status throughout our school and city, our students do not always have access to readily available, contemporary texts. By building my classroom library, I will be able to provide that for my students.
Reading is the bridge to building empathy, understanding, and acceptance in our world. As part of the curriculum for our new Literacy class, our intention is to help students interact with texts by providing books that deal with contemporary topics that our students encounter on a daily basis. By learning about someone else's life, experiences, or circumstances, through both fiction and nonfiction texts, we are able to gain insight into the lives of others. This allows for students to make connections with texts, build relevance, and construct meaning to promote a deeper understanding of the material.
