The school where I teach is in an urban setting with a strong Franco-American heritage due to French Canadian immigrates seeking work in the textile and paper mills. Approximately 15 years ago, a new group of Somalian immigrants have made this city their home too. The school where I teach has more than 750 students in 7th and 8th grades and is considered a Title One school where all students qualify for free lunch. I work directly with approximately 140 of the 7th grade students on one of 6 teams. In my General Education Social Studies classroom, I teach a variety of students, many who are identified with a disability, as English Language Learners, and Gifted and Talented. Despite these differences, they all have one thing in common, they want to have a learning environment that allows them to achieve their full potential.
