Imagine sitting roughly 6 hours in a stiff-backed chair with few opportunities to move around. Sounds awful, right?! Just like adults get tired of sitting in hard chairs all day, students do too! Studies have shown that allowing options of flexible (and often more comfortable) seating enhance student learning. These studies show that students learn better when they are physically active and comfortable. Students are able to bounce on an exercise ball, sit, stand, kneel, etc.
Some of the seating options that will be provided with this project are fidget bands, wobble cushions, a futon, low parsons tables, yoga mats, bean bags chairs, clipboards, and more!
All of these options will give my students more opportunities to sit comfortably and move around while they are learning. The parsons tables sit low to the floor & will be used with the wobble cushions or yoga mats. The futon will provide another option for students in our reading center and study corner. The clipboards provide a stable working platform for students who opt for floor, futon, or bean bags options.
A fully funded project would not only help my students stay engaged in our learning throughout the day, but it would also allow them to make responsible choices and take ownership of their learning. I cannot wait to see all of the things we can do with flexible seating!
