Many students come to 7th grade without ever experiencing the wonder of the Harry Potter novels. In addition, these same students have difficulty understanding themes in literature, such as love, friendship, and sacrifice. By using this novel, I can teach students to understand the elements of a story, analyze a well-written piece of literature, and open their minds to a magical journey. The students will travel to Hogwarts with Harry, Ron, and Hermione and discover how Joseph Campbell's theory of The Hero's Journey applies to contemporary young adult stories. In addition, they will identify themes and learn how the author teaches lessons in the story that can be applied to their lives.
