With so many other options, getting students to read actual books is a challenge. Our department has worked hard the last few years to create classroom libraries full of high-interest independent reading novels. These are not purchased by the district but by each teacher through grants and out of our own pockets.
Who sits down to read on a cold, concrete floor with fluorescent lighting? No one! A plush area rug, some comfortable chairs, and soft lighting will create an inviting reading nook in my classroom. The donation of these materials deemed "not necessary" will foster eager, willing readers.
With this donation, I will be able to buy QUALITY, WASHABLE seating that should last years.
