Research indicates that when students have access to diverse, inclusive texts that reflect their identities, students are not only more likely to engage in the action of reading, but they are also more likely to begin to identify themselves as readers. This shift in perspective is imperative and its effects are not to be taken lightly.
When students read texts that encourage them to embrace and celebrate the complexity of their identities, they strengthen their academic self-concept and sense of self-worth. This leads to higher engagement in core subjects resulting in grades and skills that will lead them down a path of continued academic achievement into high school and beyond.
