Given the currently bleak condition of the few instruments like rhythm sticks and tambourines these kids have, it is absolutely crucial that they be supplied with new instruments. They need things like Boomwhackers, drums, and movement scarves to feel and experience music and harmony. Boomwhackers will be used to create chordal harmonies with my intermediate students. Movement scarves and drums will serve to reinforce beats, rhythms and musical movement.
I hope to bring more opportunities to these students, whom often are at a socioeconomic disadvantage. I want to show them that this is not their identify, but only a challenge. These instruments will show them a little sliver of the great opportunities that this beautiful world can open up to them.
