Everything I do in my classroom is based on research and best practices for kids. I have observed other classrooms that have flexible seating and the benefits include using up excess energy, increased motivation and engagement, creating a better oxygen flow to the brain, and improving core strength and overall posture. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that physical activity is linked to higher academic performance, better health, and improved behavior. Flexible seating will give students choice, improve community and collaboration, comfort, movements and sensory input.
My students are ages 5 and 6 and are still learning what works best for them. I differentiate instruction to suit the needs of each individual student, so why not do the same when it comes to seating options. In other words, a differentiated learning approach is more likely to reach students than the traditional one-size-fits-all model.
