The demands on children and teachers in school are constantly increasing and this can be a source of stress, anxiety and yes meltdowns! Preschoolers are growing up with technology like never before and we can use this to our advantage to help them learn how to deal with these strong emotions.
Our class will be using iPads to help develop strong social/emotional skills through the classdojo positive behavior support program.
Through classdojo.com each child selects their own silly monster avatar. How cool is that! Teachers will be able to reinforce positive skills such as sharing and helping classmates by giving the child positive points. Behaviors that are interfering with a child’s success can also be tracked. We can celebrate success and personalize support strategies to help struggling students. Sharing information with parents can help answer the "How was school today" question.
There are also mindful breathing and mindful movement activities that children can use to calm themselves and prevent emotional outbursts. One of the best things about the program is that it’s not solely teacher led. Most importantly, children will use the iPads to photograph their classmates demonstrating positive social behaviors. What better way to put learning in their hands and give them ownership over their own progress and success as we build a caring classroom community!
