My students are expected to meet independent reading goals throughout the school year. A large library with leveled reading selections and varied story choice gets students excited to achieve their goals. Every book that we add to the student library creates a new opportunity for students to find a story that they might connect with, practice comprehension through, learn new words from, and cultivate an appreciate for storytelling and writing.
Daily reading that is both high interest and within a student's targeted reading range is proven to expand their literary skills.
Constant development of reading skills continues to bleed in other areas of student life: not only do test taking skills improve across content areas, but empathy expands.
Thanks so much for contributing to the next generation of readers!
