Calculators are essential tools in advanced level mathematics. These tools help support students with solving complex math problems using equations, formulas, and even basic operations. My classes are in diar need of calculators! Currently, we have a few, however, during activities, each calculator has to be shared between one or two others students. As a result, students may not have opportunity to use the calculator to complete an entire task or one student may dominate the entire use. Additionally, the condition of the calculators have suffered from extreme wear and tear, error messages and the number keys stick and are unreliable. For example, when a student enter a series of numbers, some of the numbers will not register even though the button was pushed. As a result, the calculator will display the wrong answer despite the student performing the correct steps, formula, etc. This situation occurred quite frequently last year, and to a student who finds mathematics a little hard to grasp, having a dysfunctional calculator can cause frustration, confusion and decrease their confidence. I do not want this to happen to any of my students. My goal is for every student to succeed and I strongly believe that having the right tools such as high functioning calculators for each student, will assist in making this happen.
