A Man Who Loved Clowns is a novel about coping with mental disability in the family. The story is based on the author's personal experience of life with her brother, Richard, who himself had Downs Syndrome. I feel like this is a story that will compel students to read, while serving as a great tool for teaching literary elements in the classroom.
Receiving 60 copies of this novel will ensure that I have enough copies for all of my students this year, while keeping some extra on-hand in the classroom. Therefore, I can give students some reading assignments to complete at home so that we have more time to dive deeper into the text in class.
