Students will participate in a Novel study using the book, Life As We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer. My students will learn terms and their context relating to this novel. The will work on language arts standards to support the ELA teachers. Such standards will include, but are not limited to identify the setting, protagonist, point of view, conflicts, and plot structure of the story. They will have to think critically about how the choices that are being made impact the story, with particular emphasis on point of view. This book presents amazing opportunities for cross curricular ties. It will allow my students to learn research based skills while reading. Then, after reading this book, my students could choose to research and complete their research project on various topics, such as the moon, meteors, natural disasters and how they work, how viruses spread, or they could research the services the government provides. The possibilities with this book are endless! Harnessing my students’ enthusiasm to read and write is the reason I need these books!
