A rug in the classroom can contribute to a better environment for students and teachers. Students know that the rug is the meeting area where they will sit, listen and learn. Also, having a rug in the classroom helps define the space for whole group instruction. In my classroom, whole group literacy activities and math lessons take place on the rug. The rug also provides a comfortable place to expand the learning place onto the floor. It also serves as a meeting place when students break up to work in small groups with the teacher. Being close to the teacher helps students focus on the lesson. These are just a few of the benefits of having a rug in the classroom!
