In beginning band class, there are students learning a range of instruments: flute, tuba, trumpet, percussion, clarinet. In total, there will be students learning ten different instruments. Each instrument is unique and is like learning a new language. Some instruments have commonalities (in the same way Italian shares with Spanish) but other instruments are totally different (like Japanese and Italian). With a document camera I will be able to help unite all of these languages visually. The document camera will allow me to point things out that students will then be able to see in their music. As music becomes more complicated, I will easily and quickly be able to show a student how their musical part fits in with the trumpet player on the other side of the room. When teaching music theory, history, composition and more, the camera will serve as an environmentally friendly way of note taking and hand outs, cutting down on Xerox's and increasing student comprehension.
