My students are not typical learners. They have difficulty working for sustained amounts of time. Each student is able to pick a reinforcer and work towards earning time to use the reinforcer. To accomplish this, each student has a token board with 10 spots for tokens to be placed. Tokens are earned by completing tasks such as pointing to various body parts, saying letter sounds, identifying the functions of classroom objects etc. Once the token board is full they are immediately, given their chosen reinforcer. Children get to play with the reinforcer for about 30 seconds before picking what reinforcer, they are going to work towards earning next. It is with this reinforcement schedule and a variety of reinforcers that we are able to help children sustain their time on task and get the most out of their learning experience each and every day.
The variety of reinforcement tools will directly affect their ability to persist through difficult tasks. Since every student is an individual, we need to have a variety of reinforcers to pick from to keep students interested and motivated during learning time. We need to have several similar reinforcers since there are multiple children working for reinforcers at any given time. Stress balls, fidget toys, superhero figures, sensory processing toys and liquid timers are all reinforcers that will meet the needs of diverse learners in our classroom.
