My students face monumental academic challenges unlike any we have seen before. They began their academic journey amidst a global pandemic with their Kindergarten education disrupted and disjointed resulting in significant achievement gaps. Many of my students lack the skills typical of a first grader and I am tasked with teaching Kindergarten and first-grade concepts simultaneously. By donating to this project, you will help me create engaging math and literacy centers giving my students the differentiated resources they need to develop the necessary foundational skills for future academic success. In first grade, centers are way for busy little bodies and minds to get the movement and targeted instruction they need. I'm a first year teacher and, right now, I have a lot of incredible resources sitting in files on my computer, but haven't had the means to print, laminate, cut, organize, and implement them. This project will help me do just that. The photo boxes are perfectly sized for tiny hands. Each will contain a literacy or math activity with a sensory manipulative that targets a skill students need to master and close their achievement gaps. Sensory activities using Play-doh, connecting cubes, popsicle sticks, and clothespins, provide concrete manipulatives to help students independently practice applying their skills as they work toward mastery of grade-level standards. Centers not only allow students to demonstrate their understanding, but also build confidence in their abilities.
