Flexible seating can support classroom learning by providing students with more physical control of their persons, giving students more ownership & choice in the learning environment, and aesthetically disrupting the traditional image of the classroom with rows of desks and straight chairs. Yoga ball chairs in vibrant colors allow students to safely wiggle and fidget without disturbing other classmates.
Giving students the opportunity to choose the space and seating type that supports their learning needs is key to developing student ownership.
Fostering student ownership requires that I let go of some control of the learning space. Yoga ball chairs acknowledge students' need to move while seated at a desk and learning.
Offering flexible seating options also encourages student engagement and collaboration during instruction while also helping to build community and relationships. When students are comfortable and feel trusted and respected to make great choices, they are more likely to remain on task and demonstrate their best work and effort.
