Our students have been learning about discovering themselves as readers. One important component of this is discovering where they like to read and will read best. This does not mean only sitting at their desks, but choosing the best place for them. This may mean at the windowsill, walking around the classroom, at the carpet, etc. Many students have voiced to us through writing that they would be most comfortable with reading and be able to read for a longer period of time, if they had a more comfy spot, as in a couch. They voiced this to us, as they normally will read while sitting on their couch at home.
Our students would be able to focus more if we had some more flexible seating for them as options in the classroom. They know what they need in order to be successful. As teachers, we want our students to foster their love of reading, and not learn to hate it due to having to sit at a desk. Learning to love to read will not only help them in 8th grade, but in high school, college, and beyond.
