This room will provide a space for students that is calming, soothing, and re-energizing. My students have a variety of needs that all involve emotional regulation. Some do better with weighted objects such as medicine balls, or the pressure of a large pillow. Others need to rhythmically bounce themselves on an exercise ball, or do deep breathing exercises as they create an emotional space for themselves. Mats on the floor make the room softer for a variety of sitting areas.
Diffusing the lighting with florescent light covers helps calm their central nervous system when they become agitated. While adding softer lights such as the rope lighting further calms the students. Objects with a variety of textures and colors such as the the textured balls and pillow covers as well as the liquid floor gels, gives them something to focus on for small periods of time. We have a visual timer (which needs batteries) that helps students manage their time. Within a few minutes of using this room and its tools, most students are ready to go back to the classroom focused and ready to learn.
I have included a few ways to organize and store these items such as the nets and shower caddies. These are essential tools to help keep items within reach, but also out of the way when not in use. Also included is a window film, so that light can come in, but students still feel their privacy is protected.
