Each week my students are working on a new writing or essay and I am always being asked to help come up a with a new work or "bigger" word. I want them to independently figure this out and if they have access to a thesaurus then they can discover a "bigger" word on their own. They love to expand their writing and what better way to do that then by using a thesaurus.
We also read quite a few novels throughout the year and this means new, foreign words for my kids. As we read our way through the book, I like to give my students a list of words that they will encounter that they might have not seen before. I would like them to use a resource, such as a dictionary, to find the meaning behind it.
I also find that when my students are reading alone or in groups, they come upon a word on their own. I get asked immediately what it means or how to pronounce it. i would absolutely love to see my students make that discover on their own. Not only will it help to develop them as learners but give them the confidence to do it on their own!
