A standard in the middle school art curriculum is using symbolism in a piece of art work. Students are replacing ideas with symbols and personal imagery. The artist Charles Demuth exemplifies the use of symbolism in his painting "I Saw the Figure 5 in Gold." We will be connecting the poem "The Great Figure" that Demuth used as inspiration.
There will also be an interdisciplinary connection by using a poem they created in English class. Students will create a symbolic painting, learn about the artist through discovery bags, and finally display their pieces and poems at an art show celebrating their work.
