My students love reading high interest books with themes that they can relate to. In middle school, kids are very mean to each other, especially if they are different. These books, specifically The Bluford High Series, teach about being different and that it isn't a bad thing at all. In addition, the books relate to my students who deal with dysfunctional families, gang violence and drugs but have very positive life lessons. They also have African American characters which is really hard to find. The book discusses multiple issues which will teach these students how to thrive and overcome obstacles.
