Our day begins and ends on our area rug. It is a gathering place, attention-focusing and comfort-providing part of our classroom. From time spent sharing to review of the day’s activity, our rug is the center of many activities.
Having a comfortable place to gather for our daily activities provides a nurturing environment that promotes the educational experience of my young students. To them it is not just a place to sit. It expands their knowledge of the natural world. It teaches them togetherness with their fellow students. And, though it is a simple rug, it’s role in our day can never be underestimated.
To my students and I, it is a special place. It is the world we make it. Through song and dance, learning new cultures, sharing, and learning together, our rug is a very special place indeed.
