Teaching math can be challenging to engage all students. Many students struggle with math because they are not engaged and they are not interested in what they are learning. Technology engages students in ways that lecturing does not. I feel that using technology will help accomplish all eight mathematical practice standards: make sense of problems and persevere in solving them, reason abstractly and quantitatively, construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others, model with mathematics, use appropriate tools strategically, attend to precision, and look for and make use of structure.
Bringing tablets into the math classroom will allow my students to become interactive learners in the classroom. They will learn to collaborate together, investigate, and have fun while doing it!
Quizizz is a way for students to be engaged through their device and answering questions. This tool is great to check for understanding of a topic. Students are competitive by nature and strive to do their very best when competing against their peers. Quizizz allows students to work at their own pace and see which questions they answer right or wrong. As a teacher, I am able to see which students missed certain problems and can use this as a tool to help aid my struggling students.
Desmos is an online free graphing calculator. This allows students to graph functions, plot data points, and explore many other areas of math. Students in middle school are just starting to explore algebra, especially in 7th grade. The use of Desmos allows students to explore concepts like slope and intercepts and it allows them to color code the equations to match the graphs. These visuals are key to understanding functions. Desmos has classroom activities already developed which allows students to explore and explain their reasoning within while use the technology.
