Our goal this year is to bridge the gap between our classroom the world by getting our students to perform tasks that are seen and performed by everyday professionals. The focus will be on civil engineering as students will work with a partner to build bridges out of a chosen material. As we research bridges (their function, history, physics, etc.) students will be challenged to choose the structure they think will hold the most weight.
As we strive to bring the outside world into our classroom, we will hold an exhibition night where partners will demonstrate the integrity of their product by adding weight to their bridge in front of a real-life audience. The audience will include peers, teachers, parents, and community members that will come together to act as judges of the students' performance, learning, and their product. Our hope is that by creating this experience our students will develop a stronger connection to their learning. As most learning happens outside of the classroom we strive to give our students as much access as we can.
