I teach in a small city in West Michigan serving a social- economically diverse population. 43% of our students receive free/reduced lunch. 10% of our students are considered homeless via McKinney Vento.
That being said, the students here have come up through a system utilizing a reading workshop model of teaching, and they have grown into ravenous readers. I have a small classroom library from which 100+ books are checked out at any given time. This is a problem for book choice in general;however, it becomes more pronounced when we begin our book clubs. I survey students regularly throughout the year to be sure they have a voice in the classroom structures that work best for them. Eight out of the nine of the past surveys have demonstrated a need for more book club units throughout the year.
