The materials I receive through this opportunity will be used to repair the greenhouses that I use to assist with our science curriculum. The standard to be taught is plant life and soil types. Students look forward to this part of the curriculum because they have seen the previous classes using the greenhouses.
Learning through discovery is my biggest goal in this project. The students are given a choice as to what they want to plant. The seeds are donated by a local seed company. I have them plant the seed of their choice into four soil types (sand, clay, topsoil, and fertilized soil).
I have a misting irrigation system set up in the greenhouse to provide water daily and consistently to their plants. They record data and changes as well as take photos each day of school that we are using the greenhouse.
The materials I will need for the continued use of the greenhouses in my curriculum include the plastic cover, additional tubing for the misting system, and silicone tape for repairs on the misting system. The greenhouse plastic is a 4-5 year plastic. I currently need to replace the plastic since it has reached its five year use and is tearing.
