As a part of our slavery unit, we spend a good deal of time breathing life into the past through our examination of primary sources housed within the pages of Julius Lester's To be a Slave. Students are asked to record their thoughts, beliefs and reactions in their slavery journals. Currently I have a class set of To Be a Slave books. However, this is heavy material and there are times when students need more time to process the information. I do not have enough books to send one home with each student so that they can take the time they need to sit with and respond to the horrors of slavery.
