The "Wonder" book by R.J. Palacio will help students improve reading strategies, academic vocabulary, fluency and comprehension to become better readers. Due to third grade being a STAAR testing grade, these strategies are essential to furthering their education.
Not only will this book help with their reading strategies, these students will be exposed to accepting differences from every aspect of life. I plan on using these books to create unity and a positive mindset in the classroom. Being kind is a choice and I want my students to know that they always have the choice to do the right thing, regardless of where they come from or their home situation.
These books will be used for years to come, to not only help my students academically but to enhance their life skills. We have all experienced being put into an uncomfortable situation; whether it's losing everything and starting over or choosing to stick up for someone who cannot stand up for themselves. Being negative or mean should never override our love for one another. If we can learn to pass kindness onto others, this world will eventually be a better place.
