For this project, I am asking that one helps to fund a purchase of sixteen copies of March, a graphic novel by John Lewis. There are multiple ways that this project will make a difference in my students' learning and also improve their lives. One way this project will improve students' learning is through the use of the graphic novel format. Graphic novels are wonderful tools that can be used to help lower-level readers comprehend information. Many graphic novels such as Maus and Persepolis are utilized to help lower-level readers understand events that occurred in the world; the artwork in graphic novels often helps to provide context and background images for events that they may not be able to perceive on their own. Moreover, the use of the graphic novel can also be geared towards higher-level readers as one can ask the students about the author's intention and purpose of his or her artwork, which ties into multiple state standards and higher-level thinking.
Furthermore, having copies of March will make a difference in my students' lives as it will allow them to experience a divisive, yet historically important event in American history. By teaching March, I will be able to teach my students about the Civil Rights Movement. Additionally, I will be able to showcase to my students the horrors of the Civil Rights Movement as well as the heroism needed to obtain rights for African-Americans. This novel will also tie-in well to one of my classroom themes, which is tolerance and accepting others' beliefs.
