"Hate U Give", by Angie Thomas tells the story of a young African-American girl who witnesses a police officer shoot and kill her best friend. Her story speaks of resistance, resilience and a deep-seeded desire for social justice in our communities.
Because my students represent a vast variety of cultural backgrounds, the books they read should be relevant and authentic to their real life experiences out of the classroom, to the news stories they hear everyday, and to the causes they deeply care about. This novel would allow us to open up dialogues about race, justice and relationships in our community.
