Our region of North Carolina has a rich history with pottery. There is even a portion of highway named "Pottery Highway". Our school currently does not have access to a kiln, so my students have not had the chance to experience clay, thus not being able to experience some of this rich history hands-on. By using air dry clay and pottery tools, the students can still get the "feel" for making pottery and not just looking at it in pictures. They will be able to hear about the rich history of pottery in our area and then create a pot of their own.
These students deserve to use materials beyond the basic paper and pencil. They deserve to get their hands dirty, and to create something three-dimensional; that they can touch and explore from all different angles. For some who do not feel comfortable or successful creating on paper, this project could be their time to shine.
