My classroom at COOR Ed Center is for students with Moderate Cognitive Impairments. Students in my classroom are k-6 graders. Students attending the programs at CEC participate in educational programming based on a functional curriculum. In keeping with this concept, the purpose of the educational process is to facilitate the students' success in the larger community. The CEC experience provides an extensive set of age appropriate community based education experiences focusing on hands-on participation. Programming includes the development of communication skills, socialization skills, physical education, and pre-vocational education. The students in my classroom are full of energy and excited about learning. As a teacher in a low-income, high-poverty school, students face many challenges in and out of school. Some of these challenges are out of our control, but intend to help solve the ones that I can.
