In our classroom we love to use rich children's literature to teach skills in all content areas. One area I feel that our library is currently lacking is children's books that help to teach the behavior basics. The behavior basics curriculum teaches students through the classic books I have selected. These books will help to teach students various behaviors and ways to be successful within the classroom and in the real world. Each behavior lesson has a specific book that correlates to the lesson. The overarching units in this study include classroom rules, school rules, students behaviors, and social skills. Some specific lessons that these books will help to teach are working with others, how to act in the community, telling the truth, and asking for help.
The books that I have selected provide a fun alternative to direct instruction to teach the basics of behavior. They allow students the opportunity for critical thinking and hands on activities in our classroom. Many of the students in my classroom have goals in various social skills. These books will help to give me another way to teach these behaviors and give students an illustrated example and non-example of the behaviors.
By donating to this project, you will not only help to enhance our classroom library, you will also be helping students to reach their personal behavior goals. I am looking forward to using these books and watching as my students thrive, not only inside the classroom but also in the real world.
