Copies of the text will help my students at the beginning of each school year to reign in all of their skills after an idle summer. Our first novel will have students reading at home, writing summaries, recording character actions and formulating questions to help guide and shape their own understanding at home. Reading independently at home prepares students to discuss, create online story maps, explore inferences and cause and effect relationships in the text at school.
Having a copy of the text to use at home will help my students immensely as the expectation bar for my student's in class accomplishments will be raised.
Time dedicated to reading will no longer be a necessity in the classroom unless it is a short piece to provide background or supplement understanding. Students will be expected to use class time to draw conclusions, provide support in their speaking and writing and have time to be creative - expectations that cannot currently be met in the allotted class time.
