I serve a lot of students who come to me with developing literacy skills because they have had minimal opportunities to develop them in their high-poverty homes, and because so many of them are still acquiring English. One surefire way to increase and strengthen their reading ability is to have a multitude of books available to meet them right where they are as readers. In addition to developing their literacy skills, my students will be taking this reading a step further, and will be using the books to identify a variety of economic concepts in them such as wants and needs. These books are of high-interest, perfect for those readers who are just starting out. Most of my students do not have books at home, so it is here in my classroom that they will learn to love reading, and use those skills for advanced learning in other content areas!
