Currently, we spend at least half of each class period reading just to get through this beautiful novel. Although I love and believe whole-heartedly in the merits of reading aloud, the time spent solely on reading leaves my students fatigued and leaves little time to discuss, write, or think deeply enough about the text. Unfortunately because of the large numbers and the limited funding at our school, my students never have had the pleasure of taking the time to discuss this novel fully. By having books to take home, students will have the ability to read at their own pace, and the classroom will have the luxury to dive more deeply into the text. This will enable the students to more fully engage with and enjoy the text.
