In third grade, we start to transition from "learning to read" to "reading to learn." Many of my students do not have solid reading comprehension skills. They are at a kindergarten to first grade level in their ability to understand the text they read. They also struggle in their writing abilities.
My students need engaging text in all genres to practice comprehension strategies and writing prompts for opinion and informational essays. Scholastic Storyworks Jr. magazines offer issues with interesting and thought provoking stories, informational text, paired text for comparison and contrast, and even poetry. An important part of this subscription is the online component. I can print out the stories at lower Lexile levels for my struggling readers. There are also videos to support each story that can be extremely helpful for my ESL students. Each magazine has a teacher lesson plan that corresponds with our district's standards. I will use these magazines as part of our small groups to give my students the individualized support they need to be successful readers and writers.
