In my classroom, we focus on building a school community. When building that community, it is important that students see themselves represented in the classroom. Having a variety of multicultural books, art supplies, and different manipulatives around the classroom helps children feel included at school. These materials will also help everyone learn about different cultures around the world.
When building a classroom community, giving students opportunities to work together is important. Some of the materials that were chosen promote collaboration and cooperation. During these activities, students will build relationships with each other. This will help build their social skills which is vital in pre-k because they will use these skills the rest of their life.
