Students need calculators, not as a crutch, but as a mathematical tool to help them solve equations faster. Students often don't come with a calculator, so our math department has resorted to providing Dollar Store calculators, which are not efficient or productive, especially when trying to calculate square or cube root. Providing these calculators will level the playing field and give everyone access to this vital tool. These will belong to my classroom so that we can get multiple years of use from them. Having access to calculators will promote an equitable environment and provide an opportunity for all to be successful when given the proper tools.
