This is a very popular book and with the movie coming out soon, I want the students to read the book first. Not a lot of teachers in Hawaii still read novels because of the Wonders Curriculum. I make sure to set aside time every single day to read with the students because it's not guaranteed that they go home and read for 20 minutes. In class we have great discussions on the chapters of books and then the students do graphic organizers for character analysis, sequencing, and main idea. They transfer this information into a paragraph which helps to practice their writing skills. Books we have already read this year are The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Holes. We have had the book Holes for so long that the pages are riping and the students try their best to keep it in good shape but it's just to old.
Choosing to be kind is something that these students really cherish. Reading Wonder will have these students rethinking the way the treat others students, especially out at recess. #chooseking
