Independence is a small, rural school in southwestern Wisconsin. I teach freshmen English, four levels of high school Spanish, and enriched middle school reading. Overall, less than 50% of our students at each grade level are hitting proficiency in their reading scores. As a teacher focused on language and communication, it is my firm belief that good readers make good citizens. In order to build literacy, my students need to read. In order to read, my students need to have compelling books to choose from. While my classroom library in English is fairly well stocked, my Spanish students do not have many books to choose from that are compelling and comprehensible for their level.
