My students don't always have the most of everything. We are a low income district, with most of our students from other countries. But they always have joy in what they do.
My classroom is a creative space where an after school club that was started 4 years ago became a class. We learn theatre. We learn mythology. We learn poetry. We learn debate. We learn whatever we can get our hands and ears on.
We tackle the easy and the hard issues and learn to use our voice in whatever way we can. Sometimes it's through a rap song they have written and recorded on a phone. Sometimes it's through a play we write together and then create.
My classroom is about students learning what they need to succeed in what ever way works for them. And maybe, they learn a little about themselves along the way.
In my classroom, every student learns that they are a voice in this world. And they deserve to be heard.
