This particular collection of books represent 13 genres of in-depth learning throughout the school year. Each book covers a comprehension and grammar skill meeting Third Grade Academic Standards. Comprehension skills include compare and contrast two texts, structure of poetry, and identify details that support the main idea. Grammar skills include verb tenses, idioms, and contractions. Each book also contains vocabulary words that are pulled straight from the text. What I mostly like is that the stories are engaging and provide opportunities for students to collaborate, develop social communication, and establish a purpose for reading.
Kindergarten is the last year my students had a full year of uninterrupted learning. Opportunities to engage with peers, develop social skills, and learn by simply being in a safe environment with a diverse group of friends has been limited. What better way to learn together, both academically and emotionally, than through the joy of reading a good book.
