A year ago, Mrs. P and Mr. R ventured into the world of flexible seating in order to improve the climate in their classrooms. The results and feedback from students was overwhelming positive. Student behaviors and academic performances gradually improved after the implementation of flexible seating. However, after a year's worth of use some of our seats are starting to become worn out and overused. Some of those choices that we'd like to refresh for our students are our stability balls, stools, bouncy bands for their chairs, and their high top seating options.
Flexible seating benefits our students from both an academic and physical/health perspective. We like to be able to give our students a choice in defining their learning environment. By 6th grade students are starting to defining who they are as a learner. Sitting at a desk/table is not always the best environment to meet the needs of all learners. Our current classrooms have some of those choices, but after a year of implementing flexible seating, we need to reinvigorate and refresh those choices so the students can continue to have a safe and comfortable place to learn.
Flexible seating also improves the attentiveness and physical health of the students in our rooms. The variety of seats that we would provide give students a chance to burn more calories during class time. The seat variance also provides more "action" based seats that allow students that are hyperactive the chance to release their energy in a positive and more effective way.
