Every day brings new choices and challenges, so let's start by selecting our seat! We started the year with "choice" seating where the students were able to pick their own "traditional" desk and chair. The next phase of the project will be (in stages) taking out traditional desks and replacing them with more comfortable seating. This helps students become self sufficient in understanding what areas of the room and types of environments will help them succeed and be the best version of themselves.
When students are given a voice, they are more likely to be engaged and take ownership over their learning. My goal is to promote independence through decreasing teacher control and increasing student choice. Fostering my students maturity and creating an environment where students feel comfortable, safe, and confident to explore all areas of learning is my ultimate goal with flexible seating!
We are requesting Gaiam Kids Stay-n-Play Balance Balls which are wonderful stability balls for students to sit on while they work! I love that these have little legs on them so they don’t roll away when not in use. Wobble Chairs allow students to move all around and be comfortable. The love seat and velvet chairs provide students with some sensory input while also being able to choose a collaborative or solo learning spot. The bar stools will provide students with a raised view and the bar table could also serve as a standing location. The coffee table and cushions will serve as floor seating. I will also keep some traditional desks and chairs.
