The most important aspect of classroom culture is fostering a strong sense of community. The primary way we build community in my classroom is through morning meetings.
Morning meetings are times when students sew strong social bonds that carry them through the year. They build respect for each other day in and day out by participating in activities that help them learn about one another's preferences, fears and life goals. It is also the centerpiece for our classroom discussions where students can safely express themselves and take part in conflict resolution.
A new classroom carpet will not only help my students create an inclusive community, but also provide them with a comfy place to read and write during our workshops.
